-
Water – Pack at least one gallon of water per person per day for 3 days. You may need more water if you are in a hot climate, pregnant or ill. You can buy bottled water or fill clean containers yourself. Replace the water every 6 months. Consider investing in a water filtration system like a portable distilling tool.
-
Non-perishable food – Trail Mix, Protein bars, dried fruit, canned tuna, and peanut butter are good options. Make sure to include a can opener if packing canned goods. Consider including a Multitool, since it can double as a repair tool for electronics. Rotate food items every 6 months.
-
First aid kit – Include first aid supplies like bandages, gauze, antiseptic, pain/fever relievers, latex gloves, and a thermometer. Use an easily identifiable bag to store supplies.
-
Medications – Pack several days’ worth of essential prescription and non-prescription medications. Don’t forget medications for children and pets too. Consider Over-The-Counter Pain and Flu Medications such as Ibuprofen (Advil) and Acetaminophen (Tylenol).
-
Flashlight – Try to choose a flashlight that can charge batteries manually, such as hand crank flashlights.
-
Radio and batteries – Try to choose a hand crank radio so you can stay informed about the emergency.
-
Batteries – Look for rechargeable, portable batteries that are interchangeable between electronics. Consider purchasing solar recharging or crank recharging power solutions.
-
Phone: Many solar-based rechargeable battery banks are well suited for ensuring access to communication. Consider that significant emergencies can often prevent cellular services. Ensure you include alternative communication devices, such as radio handsets and satellite phones.
-
Personal hygiene items – Toilet paper, soap, Hand Sanitizer, toothpaste, period products, and consider birth control products if necessary.
-
Multi-purpose tool – Pack a utility knife, pliers, screwdriver, etc. to assist with repairs and access. Multitools that include can opens are also advisable if bringing canned foods.
-
Cash – Have some cash on hand during a power outage. There is no guarantee that ATM and credit card services in the area will be available and working.
-
Important documents – Photocopies of identification, insurance policies, birth certificates, medical information, etc. can assist if originals are lost or left behind. Consider scanning and backing up all copies to a cloud service or portable USB storage device. Your phone memory card can also act as a backup of some of the most important documents, provided they are added in advance. This can be as simple as taking clear photos in advance of all major documents. Follow the 3 2 1 principle of data protection, especially if you are a business owner.
- Masks: Try to include at least 3 N95 masks for each person.
